January Update

Happy New Year and welcome to an Olympic 2012 from Lovereading! Are you thinking about your New Year’s resolutions? Whatever your goals for 2012 we can help you help yourself with our New Year, New You section. Or you may just want help to find a jolly good book to get stuck into, in which case we have endless recommendations on the website! Either way, read on to find out what’s new this New Year.

Author of the Month

‘Tell No One’ but this month’s ‘Long Lost’ author of the month is ‘Live Wire’, Harlan Coben, so ‘Hold Tight’ and take more than ‘Just One Look’ at his amazing collection of pacey, page-turning thrillers.

Book puns aside, the fabulous new Myron Bolitar adventure Live Wire is out now and featured here together with Coben’s older titles all with free downloadable extracts to get your 2012 off to a thrilling start!

January Books of the Month

Even after the Christmas rush and in the midst of January sale madness we have ensured that our shelves are still bursting with fabulous books. Definitely not to miss are our two MEGA books of the Month:

The Legacy of Hartlepool Hall by Paul Torday From the author of instant bestseller Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (film version due for release March 2012) comes a brilliantly witty tale of unwanted inheritance and the preservation of a lost way of life.

Catch Your Death by Louise Voss and Mark Edwards A shining example of the power of self-publishing, this was an eBook sensation in 2011 and is now a real book! Dan Brown, meets Stieg Larsson meets Michael Crichton in a crackingly well-written, fast-paced, rollercoaster thriller.

Also don’t miss – our Non Fiction Books of the Month

Young Henry: The Rise of Henry VIII by Robert Hutchinson

A huge hit in hardback, the compelling, dynamic and unfussy history of the early life of England’s most infamous king is now in paperback.

Or our two travel Books of the Month –

In an Antique Land by Amitav Ghosh

An astonishing history of Egypt presented in the guise of a traveller’s tale. A magical and intimate biography of a richly mysterious land.

To a Mountain in Tibet by Colin Thubron

Thought-provoking and fascinating stories from a land imbued with religion. Described as the most personal of his journeys yet.

Lovely Jubbly! – Our January Guest Editor, Simon Lelic

A self-confessed “Del Trotter”, Simon runs a small import/export business as well as writing his incredibly engaging stories. Where does he find the time, we want to know? Author of three hard-hitting novels, he does not shy away from the big issues of society. His third novel, The Child Who, tells the heart-wrenching story of a schoolboy who murders his classmate and the high-profile court case that follows. We are delighted that Simon has stretched time even more to be our Guest Editor this month and share with us some of his fascinating and eclectic personal favourites too.

New Year, New You – Help Yourself!

As already mentioned, our great Self Help section, New Year, New You, is teeming with great – handpicked – lifestyle changing titles to help you learn, develop, relax and be happier in 2012. Make this Olympic year your time to go for gold. In this diverse selection, we particularly like The Para Fitness Flick for the boys and for the girls Calories and Corsets. On your marks! Click here for more …

Costa Book Award category winners

The winners in all five categories of this 40 year old coveted annual prize (formerly the Whitbread prize) have just been announced and they’re ALL featured in our Book Awards section.

With gongs for a former Great Ormond Street nurse and the Poet Laureate, among others, there is a wealth of talent to discover. The overall winner will be announced on 24 January, so this is your chance to take a peek at the category winners and see what all the fuss is about! We think the children’s category winner, Blood Red Road book 6069 from debut novelist Moira Young, is very special indeed.

First Footers! – January Debuts of the Month

The Thoughts and Happenings of Wilfred Price, Purveyor of Superior Funerals by Wendy Jones. Due out later in the month but definitely worth looking at the free Opening Extract today, this is a beautifully crafted tale of love, secrecy and the binds of duty against the rural backdrop of the claustrophobic 1920s Welsh countryside.

Secrets of the Tides by Hannah Richell – A beautiful and haunting debut novel about a family struggling with long-not-forgotten tragedy. We LOVE this very special book and have 10 copies which we’ll give to specially selected readers to review for us. If you’d like to be one of them, click here to find out how to get in touch!

So, Happy Reading –  find more personal recommendations on the website.
